Sandakan, April 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim visited Sandakan on Wednesday to extend support and assistance to victims of a recent fire that left many families displaced and devastated.
In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, Anwar described the emotional impact of witnessing the aftermath of the tragedy, particularly the plight of young children who are too young to the situation, and parents quietly to their grief.
“I admit, my heart is deeply shaken seeing small children who still do not understand what has happened, parents holding back tears, and families now relying solely on the strength they have left. This is not just a test, but a deeply painful ordeal,” he wrote.
Despite the overwhelming loss, the Prime Minister highlighted the resilience shown by the victims. “Amid such heavy sorrow, I witnessed something far greater — perseverance. They have not fallen, but continue to endure,” he said.
Anwar assured that the Federal Government would not abandon those affected. Immediate assistance has been mobilized, including financial aid for families and schoolchildren, essential supplies, temporary shelter, and continuous support in close coordination with the State Government.
Efforts are also being accelerated to help victims rebuild their lives with dignity and safety, including ensuring that children can return to school as soon as possible.
Acknowledging that some victims are non-citizens, Anwar emphasized that compassion must transcend borders during times of crisis. “In moments like this, humanity cannot be limited by boundaries. We will help as much as we can — with food, shelter, and safety,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that he and his wife, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, along with all Malaysians, are praying for the victims’ strength and recovery.
“May Allah ease their sorrow, strengthen their spirits, and replace this hardship with renewed hope,” he expressed.
