MELAKA, Oct 25 — A global investor plans to invest US$50 billion (RM204 billion) in artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies and data centres in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.
Anwar said the investor conveyed its intention during a video conference with him last Tuesday, describing the proposed investment as one of the largest in the region.
He said the investment could create new and better employment opportunities for Malaysians, particularly young people, including students in schools and institutions of higher learning.
The Prime Minister was speaking at the Sentuhan Kasih MADANI programme and the launch of the National Cost of Living Action Plan 2030 at the Hang Jebat Sports Complex here on Saturday. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali was also present.
Anwar stressed that Malaysia must maintain international investors’ confidence through political stability, effective leadership and a conducive investment environment.
He also highlighted the country’s multiracial and multireligious harmony as a key strength that should be leveraged to attract more foreign investment.
According to Anwar, investor confidence could be affected if political instability and persistent disputes among the country’s leadership undermine confidence in the government.
He said Malaysia must continue strengthening its capabilities in emerging technologies, particularly AI, digitalisation and semiconductors, to sustain economic growth.
Anwar added that workforce training and skills development would be crucial in helping Malaysia move beyond back-end technology operations towards middle- and front-end activities, which offer higher value-added opportunities.
He emphasised that investment-led economic growth must translate into tangible benefits for the public, including better jobs and an improved standard of living.
