DUBLIN — President Donald Trump on Sunday downplayed calls for tighter oversight of artificial intelligence, saying the United States must maintain its lead over China in the technology race as AP reports.

Trump acknowledged that some regulation may be necessary but offered no details on what rules his administration might support. He also dismissed warnings that AI is advancing too quickly without adequate safeguards, attributing such concerns to what he called “negative forces.”

“We can put guardrails, we can do this and that, but I think you have a lot of negative forces that are bringing it up that … shouldn’t be bringing it up,” Trump told reporters during a weekend trip to Ireland. “But whoever wins with AI wins.”

Trump later rejected the suggestion that he was minimizing the potential dangers of AI, saying the technology would be “more good than bad, but by a lot.”

His comments came a day after Dario Amodei, CEO of AI company Anthropic, called for the industry to slow its rapid development to allow safety measures to catch up. Other technology leaders, including Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have also raised concerns about the pace of AI development.

Asked whether AI development should be slowed or more heavily regulated, Trump said the United States is ahead of China and that he wants to preserve that advantage.

“Frankly, I want to keep it that way because whoever wins AI wins,” Trump said.

Trump’s remarks come ahead of a planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House later this month. Artificial intelligence is expected to be among the issues discussed as the two countries compete for technological and economic influence.
