KOTA KINABALU: The inclusion of Sabah identity elements, or “Citra Sabah,” in the new Year One and Form One curriculum from 2027 is a positive step towards helping younger generations better understand Sabah’s culture, diversity and role in the formation of Malaysia, said UPKO Treasurer and Kadazandusun Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) Supreme Council Member Dennison R Indang.

He welcomed Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek’s announcement that Citra Sabah would be incorporated into the new curriculum following discussions under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Dennison said the initiative should go beyond introducing Sabah’s cultural heritage and also provide students with an age-appropriate understanding of the state’s history and its role in the formation of Malaysia.

“Understanding Sabah should encompass our culture, the diversity of our communities and our history, including Sabah’s role in the formation of Malaysia,” he said in a Facebook post.

He also hoped the new curriculum would strengthen students’ understanding of MA63, with the subject matter presented accurately and appropriately according to the age and level of pupils, MA63 was signed on July 9, 1963, while Malaysia was formed on Sept 16, 1963. Dennison said the significance of these dates should be accompanied by an understanding of the negotiations, public perspectives and important agreements that shaped the formation of Malaysia.

“Our children should understand how Malaysia was formed, the contributions of Sabah and Sarawak, and why this history remains important to our shared life today,” he said.

Dennison stressed that historians and educators should be involved in developing the content to ensure that it is based on credible historical sources while remaining accessible and easy for students to understand.

He said an accurate and balanced approach would help young Malaysians develop a stronger appreciation of Sabah’s identity while also deepening their understanding of the foundations of the Malaysian federation.

“This is a positive step. I hope its implementation will help the younger generation know Sabah better and appreciate the history behind the formation of Malaysia,” he said.
