Kota Kinabalu, April 23 — The Sabah Ports Authority (LPPS) recorded a total cargo handling volume of 532,391 TEUs in 2025, a significant increase from 386,293 TEUs the previous year, reflecting encouraging signs of economic growth in the state.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister III and Minister of Industrial Development, Entrepreneurship and Transport, Datuk Ewon Benedick, said the achievement underscores the urgent need to further enhance port efficiency to support trade, industry, and investment activities.

“Ports are not merely logistics hubs, but key catalysts for industrial growth, trade, and investment in the state,” he said. “Their efficiency and competitiveness will determine our ability to attract investors and strengthen Sabah’s position in the regional trade network.”

He made these remarks while speaking at the Sabah Ports Authority Excellent Service Awards 2025 ceremony held at Sutera Harbour here last night.

Ewon noted that in line with the “Better Ports, Better Sabah” aspiration, the development of the port sector must continue to be strengthened to ensure it remains modern, efficient, and competitive in meeting current industry demands.

He highlighted that the Sapangar Bay Container Port (SBCP) expansion project, expected to be completed by the end of next year, is set to significantly boost the state’s port capacity and operational efficiency.

“This initiative will reinforce Sabah’s position as a regional logistics hub and create more opportunities for trade and investment,” he said.

At the same time, Ewon acknowledged that the port sector faces several operational challenges, particularly at Sapangar Bay Container Port, Tawau Port, and Sandakan Port.

However, he said the state government has taken a proactive and integrated approach to address these issues effectively and continuously.

“Among the measures are the implementation of eight Interim Action Plans approved during the Cabinet meeting on February 18, as well as engagement sessions with industry players on March 5. I also chair the Task Force monitoring the implementation of these initiatives, which convened on April 21,” he said.

He added that he has personally visited several ports to assess the situation on the ground and ensure that arising issues are addressed promptly.

According to Ewon, these efforts have already shown positive progress, with growing confidence among port users in the ongoing improvements.

During the ceremony, a total of 47 LPPS staff members were presented with the Excellent Service Award 2025 in recognition of their performance and contributions over the past year.
