GenAI Fund, the pioneering Generative AI specialized fund in Southeast Asia, today announced the release of its highly anticipated “ASEAN GenAI Startup Report 2024“.
This comprehensive study offers unprecedented insights into the rapidly evolving Generative AI landscape across the ASEAN region, highlighting innovative startups and key trends shaping the future of AI in Southeast Asia.
Unveiling ASEAN’s GenAI Potential
The report addresses three critical questions:
- How is ASEAN shaping up in terms of Generative AI, and what are the key trends and pain points?
- Are big tech companies allies or competitors to GenAI startups?
- To fund or not to fund: The case for GenAI startups in Southeast Asia.
Drawing from an extensive database of 700 GenAI startups, a survey of 250 startup respondents, and in-depth interviews with 25 featured startups, the report provides a holistic view of the ASEAN GenAI ecosystem.
It also incorporates valuable insights from over 15 prominent VCs, accelerators, and incubators, including Lightspeed Ventures, DO Ventures, Wavemaker, and Ascend Vietnam Ventures (AVV).
The report’s findings are enriched by contributions from key government bodies such as Vietnam’s National Innovation Center (NIC), Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), and Indonesia’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics (KOMINFO). Major cloud and tech players like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure have also provided crucial perspectives, alongside industry giants such as OpenAI, Meta, and Cohere.
Key Findings from the Report
The ASEAN GenAI Startup Report 2024 reveals several crucial insights into the region’s AI ecosystem (available for download

- Geographic Distribution: Singapore leads with 44% of ASEAN’s GenAI startups, followed by Vietnam (27%) and Indonesia (13%). This distribution is expected to shift in the next 18 months, with Vietnam emerging as a popular outsourcing destination due to its technical talent and lower costs.
- B2B Dominance: An overwhelming 92% of ASEAN GenAI startups focus on B2B or B2B2C models, marking a significant shift from the region’s previously B2C-centric landscape. Top sectors include Productivity & Business Solutions (26%), Healthcare & Wellness (13%), and Financial Services (13%).
- Go-to-Market (GTM) Challenges: Startups face numerous hurdles, including slow enterprise onboarding processes, difficulties in executing effective Proofs of Concept (POCs), achieving product-market fit, and competing with established SaaS and Big Tech players.
- Big Tech Relationships: The report highlights the complex dynamics between GenAI startups and Big Tech companies. While cloud providers like AWS, GCP, and Azure are vital for infrastructure, they can also become competitors. Similarly, foundation model providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic offer crucial capabilities but may potentially overshadow startup offerings as they evolve. However, there’s a rising trend of GenAI startups leveraging big tech to GTM with enterprises.
- Funding Landscape: Currently, 50% of GenAI startups in ASEAN are bootstrapped or angel-funded, with 41% having secured pre-seed or seed funding. Only 16% are currently profitable, indicating the sector’s early stage in the region.
- Future Outlook: The report predicts significant growth in the ASEAN GenAI sector, projecting a 50% year-over-year funding increase. This growth is expected to be driven by increasing VC confidence, the emergence of enterprise Corporate Venture Capital arms, and a rise in mergers and acquisitions.
GenAI Fund’s Commitment to ASEAN’s AI Future
