“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”, a quote by Martha Graham, an American modern dancer and choreographer, whose style, the Graham technique, reshaped American dance and is still taught worldwide.

Press KL has spotted a dance studio in Subang Jaya that passionately produces contemporary dance talents.

We are introducing DanzTech Movement, a dance school founded by Melody Tee, a former Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore student who brings out the hidden language of the soul.

Founded in 2018, Melody Tee aims to unleash the essence of performing arts through technical dance skills fostering love for the dance and joy of movement.

In August, it was even more memorable for her dance team to secure two prestigious awards at the Asia Pacific Dance Competition 2024 held in Bangkok.

The team bagged the Spirit of APDC Award (Paulina Tan Pei Sui) and The President’s Cup APDC 2024 (Danztech Movement).

Melody Tee is the choreographer and danced by Caeley Heong Su Ern, Chan Shuen Ern Shermaine, Chia Wen Xin, Damia Alissya, Isabel Kong I Sa, Luanne Lee Cai Ying, Paulina Tan Pei Suu, Saibya, Tan Zhi Han, Wee Rou Ying.

This is not the first time they have won such prestigious awards, adding more success to their hard work and perseverance. 

The journey of Melody Tee

Melody Tee started ballet when she was 5 years old.

During her primary and secondary school, Melody never misses to join competitions, and stage dances and even took the lead in curating dances.

She is passionate about upbeat and energetic music and movement as a teenager.

Captivated by the expression of fluid dance movements, Melody took a chance by auditioning for a diploma programme at LASALLE College of the Arts.

She has learnt from many dance teachers including picking up basic dance gestures from the Indian Classical dance Bharatanatyam.

However, she highly speak to have been inspired and learning dance techniques from dancer Albert Tiong and Susan Yeung.

Albert Tiong is a choreographer, and educator who has made significant contributions to the dance community both in Singapore and internationally.

But before joining the audition, her Father Mr Eric Tee Ping, was supportive of her making a career in dance, but Melody’s mother was against her dream.

Melody relates that her mother saw no future in dance and wanted her to pursue studies in Mass Communication, which she completed but yet again inaudibly joined dance clubs and participated in competitions.

However, she turns the odds, becoming a successful dancer, choreographer, and owner of a dance school making her both parents even prouder of her continuous success.

Melody Tee also travelled to several places under Maya Dance theatre company, under the artistic director Kavitha Krishnan.

According to Melody, Kavitha is like a godmother in Singapore, who guided her mentally and physically as well as gave her opportunity to perform in the artistry industry.

“Directing choreography presented the opportunity to spot and train talented dancers, it was here where I truly began developing a love for teaching and guiding fellow dancers.

“I found myself as being responsible towards my students who have believed in me to help them in their artistic journey.

“I want to support and nurture students and add value in their unique way,” said Melody.

How I started the studio?

Melody rented a space at her apartment to teach dance classes. There was no promotion and was only on casual introduction from close friends.

The real turning point in life came in knocking on her doors when she was offered to choreograph for the Gardens Mall for one of the Chinese festivals.

That time, she required a company to bill her invoice and that was the beginning of the Danztech Movement. 

At her studio in SS15, Subang Jaya, they offer dance classes, commercial and educational.

They even send students for exams and certification, to equip themselves as a professional dancer.

They have students as young as 6 years old and mature students at 48 years old. 

Coming September 22, Melody is opening another branch of Danztech Movement studio at SS15, Subang Jaya, expanding her performing arts business. 

She also hopes for more recognition of performing arts given to private studios by the government and positively looking forward to any collaborations from both public and private to make Malaysia one of the popular performing arts talent producers.
