KOTA KINABALU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today chaired the first 2026 meeting of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Implementation Action Council (MTPMA63) here, attended by the Chief Minister of Sabah, the Premier of Sarawak, as well as federal and state leaders.

The meeting focused on progress in implementing agreements under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), while also examining several strategic matters directly affecting the interests and future of Sabah and Sarawak.

Among the key issues discussed were initiatives to strengthen border security in Sabah and Sarawak, additional federal civil service positions and the implementation of Borneonisation in the federal public service in both states.

The meeting also deliberated on the review of the Special Grant under Article 112D of the Federal Constitution, as well as increasing the number of Members of Parliament from Sabah and Sarawak.

Anwar said all matters were examined thoroughly in the spirit of a strong federation, with a firm commitment to ensuring that the rights and interests of Sabah and Sarawak are respected, protected and translated into effective decisions and implementation.

He stressed that MA63 should not be regarded merely as a historical document or an annual reminder, but as a national trust and commitment that must be fulfilled with sincerity, fairness and responsibility.

“What has been agreed upon must be implemented, while matters that remain unresolved must continue to be negotiated with wisdom, sincerity and a spirit of consensus,” he said.

The Prime Minister also reaffirmed that the Federal Government would continue to provide the widest possible space for discussions with the Sabah and Sarawak governments in addressing outstanding MA63 matters.

He said the discussions would be guided by the spirit of unity and partnership within the Federation, while ensuring that national development and prosperity are enjoyed fairly and equitably by all Malaysians.

Anwar is scheduled to return to Kuching, Sarawak next week to commemorate Malaysia Day, reflect on the history of the country’s formation and reaffirm the commitment towards building a stronger, fairer and more prosperous Malaysia for all.
