KOTA KINABALU, Aug 31 — As Malaysians celebrate National Day and Sabah Day, UPKO treasurer Dennison R. Indang has called for a stronger and more united Malaysia built on mutual respect, trust and the fulfilment of the rights of all regions.

Indang said Aug 31 should be more than a day of flying the Jalur Gemilang and remembering the nation’s history, but also an opportunity for Malaysians to reflect on the country’s journey and the responsibilities that come with independence.

He said he was proud to be a Sabahan and, at the same time, a Malaysian, stressing that patriotism should include the courage to speak honestly about issues that still needed to be addressed.

“Loving the country does not mean we cannot speak about the things that still need to be improved,” he said.

On the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Indang acknowledged that progress had been made and several matters had been implemented, but stressed that the agreement had yet to be fully realised.

He identified Sabah’s financial rights, including the full implementation of its 40 per cent entitlement, as among the major outstanding matters requiring a comprehensive resolution.

Indang said the pursuit of Sabah’s rights should not be interpreted as a rejection of Malaysia, but rather as part of the effort to strengthen the federation.

“Fighting for Sabah’s rights does not mean rejecting Malaysia. A federation becomes stronger when promises are honoured, the rights of every region are fulfilled and relationships are built on mutual trust,” he said.

He also called on Sabahans to play their part in strengthening the state by building a more resilient economy, empowering local communities, creating greater opportunities for young people, improving infrastructure and ensuring development reaches the people.

Indang said Sabahans should not have to choose between their love for Sabah and their love for Malaysia.

“We want a Malaysia that respects the spirit of its formation and a Sabah that is able to stand stronger,” he said.

As the nation marks its 69th National Day, Indang urged Malaysians to celebrate the values of unity, freedom and shared responsibility while continuing to build a better future for generations to come.

He extended his National Day and Sabah Day greetings to all Malaysians and Sabahans with a message of pride and commitment.
