KUALA LUMPUR — McDonald’s Malaysia and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) are strengthening their strategic partnership to bring cleaner energy and green mobility closer to where people live, work and travel, while helping businesses and communities participate in Malaysia’s transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.

One partnership. Three solutions. One shared ambition — making the energy transition practical and accessible. The partnership brings together three complementary solutions —rooftop solar through the Supply Agreement with Renewable Energy (SARE), renewable electricity through TNB’s Green Electricity Tariff (GET), and green mobility through TNB Electron EV charging — enabled by TNB’s wider energy ecosystem and grid infrastructure.

The collaboration, witnessed by Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, is marked by the signing of the SARE agreement for the next phase of McDonald’s solar rooftop programme, the presentation of the GET certificate, and the official launch of the TNB Electron EV charging facility at McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive-Thru.

The partnership also supports Malaysia’s broader energy-transition and energy-efficiency ambitions, including the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP) 2.0, while contributing to Penang’s Energy Framework.

ONE PARTNERSHIP, THREE PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS

CLEANER ENERGY FOR BUSINESSES

Under the latest project, rooftop solar systems will be introduced at 51 additional McDonald’s restaurants, with an estimated combined capacity of 1.685 megawatt-peak (MWp). GSPARX Sdn. Bhd., a TNB subsidiary, will develop, operate and maintain the systems, with implementation expected to begin in 2026 and be completed by 2027.

The expanded solar programme builds on the partnership established in 2023 through an agreement covering 100 selected McDonald’s Drive-Thru restaurants. SARE enables businesses to adopt rooftop solar without the burden of heavy upfront investment, while GSPARX manages the development, operation and maintenance of the systems. The expansion builds on McDonald’s Malaysia’s ongoing adoption of solar energy and will further integrate renewable energy into the company’s restaurant operations.

McDonald’s Malaysia will also participate in GET for up to 285 restaurants or electricity accounts, which currently records a combined average monthly electricity consumption of approximately 15.5 GWh. This positions McDonald’s as the first and largest quick-service restaurant company in Malaysia to subscribe to GET.

CLEANER MOBILITY FOR CUSTOMERS

The TNB Electron facility at McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive-Thru is the first TNB Electron location in the food and beverage sector. It features a 200kW DC fast charger with two charging points, expandable to four, and was energised on 15 May 2026.

Operating 24 hours a day, the facility allows EV users to charge while dining, taking a break or continuing their journeys. Strategically located near the Batu Kawan Expressway and Batu Kawan Industrial Park, it provides an additional charging option for highway users, industrial traffic and the wider Seberang Perai community, while placing EV charging where customers naturally travel, dine and spend time.

TNB Electron charging facilities are also planned for additional McDonald’s restaurants nationwide, with locations and implementation timelines to be confirmed.

ENABLING THE TRANSITION AT SCALE

As at 30 June 2026, TNB’s SARE portfolio has reached 183 MWp across 442 projects, while TNB Electron has achieved 68 charging stations and 214 charge points nationwide.

TNB’s grid and wider energy ecosystem provide the backbone to integrate renewable energy, support green electricity and enable the electrification needed to scale these solutions.

Together, the solar rooftop, GET and TNB Electron initiatives demonstrate how TNB and McDonald’s Malaysia are working as strategic partners to bring the energy transition closer to everyday life — enabling cleaner energy for businesses, cleaner mobility for people, and the infrastructure and ecosystem needed to scale these solutions across Malaysia.
