KUALA LUMPUR, 20 May 2026: PAS has criticised remarks made by Tony Pua in response to the views and advice expressed by the Sultan of Selangor, saying Malaysia needs leadership that promotes unity instead of creating unnecessary controversies.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party viewed seriously the response from Tony Pua, who serves as chairman of DAP’s disciplinary and policy advisory committee, regarding the royal address by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Takiyuddin said the Sultan’s remarks should be understood within the broader context of national responsibility, moderation and the need to preserve racial harmony, constitutional principles and respect for institutions central to Malaysia’s identity.

He said Tony Pua’s response had further heightened public unease and sparked unnecessary controversy at a time when racial and religious tensions were already sensitive.

PAS stressed that any statements involving the Malay Rulers should be made with caution, respect and decorum, in line with their constitutional role and historical significance as pillars of national stability and sovereignty.

The party also linked the latest controversy to a wider series of public disputes involving issues such as the recognition of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), the use of Chinese language in official government matters, pig farming in Selangor, as well as debates over the Federal Constitution, national language policies, education philosophy and religious matters.

Takiyuddin further criticised what he described as selective respect for the constitutional monarchy, saying some parties invoke constitutional principles only when they suit their political interests while rejecting royal advice when it conflicts with their views.

“Such behaviour only exposes hypocrisy and opportunism rather than patriotism or genuine respect for the rule of law,” he said.

PAS warned that although these issues may appear administrative or policy-related individually, collectively they risk increasing public anxiety, eroding trust among communities and deepening existing polarisation if handled in an emotional and confrontational manner.

The party added that the government and national leaders must not only govern effectively, but also demonstrate the ability to maintain social stability, strengthen public confidence and prioritise national interests above partisan considerations.

“At a time when the country is facing economic pressures and global uncertainty, Malaysia needs leadership that nurtures public confidence and unity, not leadership that triggers endless controversies,” Takiyuddin said.
