PUTRAJAYA, May 16 — Malaysia must clearly express concern over any attempt by fugitive financier Jho Low to secure a presidential pardon in the United States over offences connected to the 1MDB scandal, said DAP National Chairman Gobind Singh Deo.

Gobind said reports claiming Jho Low had applied for a US presidential pardon should not be treated lightly, stressing that all individuals involved in the 1MDB scandal must continue to face legal action without exception.

While agreeing with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that the matter ultimately rests with the United States authorities, Gobind said Malaysia must remain firm and consistent in its stand that justice must be served for all parties linked to the scandal.

He described the 1MDB affair as a “heist of national proportions” that caused massive financial and reputational damage to Malaysia, adding that the country continues to bear multi-generational losses arising from the scandal.

Gobind also noted that the Malaysian public had played a historic role in removing the previous government in the 2018 general election to ensure accountability over the scandal.

Referring to court findings in the 1MDB trials, Gobind highlighted remarks by Justice Collin Sequerah, who had stated that evidence showed an “unmistakable bond and connection” between the accused and Jho Low, whom the court described as acting as a “proxy and intermediary” in 1MDB affairs.

Gobind said the international nature of the scandal, which involved complex cross-border financial transactions and investigations, meant that legal action against Jho Low abroad should be viewed as an integral part of the broader pursuit of justice.

He stressed that individuals involved in the “global conspiracy” surrounding 1MDB must be brought to justice, whether in Malaysia or in any other country where criminal acts connected to the scandal took place.

Gobind added that Malaysia must continue pressing for Jho Low’s return to face charges in local courts.

The Digital Minister said he intends to raise the matter during the Cabinet meeting next Wednesday in the hope that the government would decide on the next course of action regarding the issue.
