KUALA LUMPUR, April 20, 2026 — The opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN) has called for improvements across Malaysia’s public transport system following a series of recent service disruptions.

PN Secretary-General Takiyuddin Hassan said incidents affecting urban rail services, including the LRT Kelana Jaya Line and the MRT Putrajaya Line, as well as other technical issues, highlight the need to strengthen operational management, maintenance practices, and system reliability.

He noted that when disruptions occur across different modes of transport, it points to areas where coordination and preparedness could be further improved.

Takiyuddin also referred to the recent baggage handling disruption at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which caused delays and inconvenience to passengers, with some experiencing long waits to collect their luggage.

He said the incident underscores the importance of ensuring that key transport hubs, particularly KLIA as the country’s main international gateway, operate smoothly and efficiently.

PN has urged the Ministry of Transport Malaysia (MOT) to provide a clear explanation of the issues involved and to outline steps being taken to address them, including maintenance efforts, ongoing upgrades, and contingency planning.

The coalition also called for a clear timeline covering immediate actions as well as longer-term improvements to enhance the resilience and efficiency of the overall transport system.

Takiyuddin noted that while an emergency meeting has reportedly been held following the KLIA incident, it would be beneficial for the matter to be reviewed in a broader context to support continuous improvements across the sector.

He added that maintaining reliable and efficient public transport services remains important for both daily commuters and the country’s wider economic activities.
