KUALA LUMPUR, March 21, 2026: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) central leadership has called for an immediate end to the ongoing public dispute between Lim Guan Eng and Chow Kon Yeow over Penang’s new land tax rates, stressing the need to uphold party discipline and unity.

DAP Secretary-General Loke Siew Fook said the leadership is “deeply concerned and disturbed” by the public exchange, describing it as an inappropriate way to handle internal disagreements, particularly amid current geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

He noted that Lim, a former Penang Chief Minister and former DAP Secretary-General, should be mindful of party discipline and address disagreements through internal channels rather than airing them publicly.

“Differences of opinion should not be expressed in a manner that undermines the Chief Minister and the state government,” Loke said in a statement.

At the same time, Loke acknowledged that the concerns raised should not be dismissed. He said Chow, as the current Chief Minister, must take into account public feedback and stakeholder grievances, especially on matters affecting the rakyat.

He added that while reviewing land tax rates in commercial areas is necessary for the state’s financial sustainability, the implementation must be balanced and considerate.

In particular, he stressed that taxes involving educational institutions, including public schools, should remain minimal.

Loke said he will convene a meeting involving both leaders to resolve the issue amicably.

He emphasised that party leaders must avoid public disputes and instead work together constructively, keeping their focus on serving the people and protecting public interest.
